In my last article I provided a short overview of Clubhouse, the new audio app that is providing a digital platform for having conversations, and thus, for great storytelling.
The rooms are created by moderators, sometimes on the fly, but more often under the umbrella of a club. These clubs have members and followers (don’t ask me why they’ve set it up this way, and they may, in fact, decide to combine the two groups into one) who are notified whenever a club opens or schedules rooms about a specific topic.
Taking the plunge into Clubhouse
I played around on the platform for a couple of weeks (I was pulled in by a friend who was doing some fun stuff with social entrepreneurs) to get my bearings, stepping into various rooms, listening to speakers, jumping up on stage to speak (often I’m invited) and checking out new clubs or upcoming rooms.
It soon became apparent that this was an ideal platform for Storytelling with Impact. And while I did create a club, I’m still trying to figure out my place in the ecosystem. At present I’m hosting a series of rooms that allows anyone on the platform to come up on stage, tell a personal story, or ask a question about storytelling.
Some upcoming Clubhouse rooms for Storytelling with Impact
On a 7/24 platform, the challenge becomes how to hit the various time zones around a planet that is constantly spinning. At the moment I am using a strategy to cover bases that include the Americas (my co-moderator is in Argentina), Europe (co-moderator is located in Germany) and across Asia / Oceania (this co-moderator lives in Australia).
What have the results been so far? Incredible stories of triumph and tragedy, victories and failures, but in every case, stories of the human experience. Some people are hard at work on their story, others have an idea, but don’t know how to turn that idea into an impactful story. Questions arise about openings, closings and narrative structure.
My advice? Jump in. The vibe is exciting and inspiring. As you would expect there’s a plethora of hucksters and purveyors of snake oil, but overall it’s time well spent since every user has the freedom to choose where they want to go, and when to leave.
